Griffin Tavern is simply a social gathering place for everyone. We are the owners, Jim & Debbie Donehey, residents of Flint Hill, VA. We purchased land here in February 1997 after falling in love with the atmosphere of the area and finally made it our permanent residence in March 2002. During the many years that we traveled to the area on weekends, we found it difficult to find a good burger and a cold draft beer for lunch. We are very proud that we only offer home-style cooked meals using fresh ingredients; you won't find store bought salad dressings here!
We had worked for many years for Capital One and were looking for a new business to keep us occupied. Debbie had always dreamed of a restaurant, Jim envisioned a Pub like the ones he had frequented in the UK. When the owners of the beautiful building in Flint Hill known as Chappalapa, or the Bradford House, became interested in selling due to their business growth, we knew this was the opportunity we had been waiting for. The building needed some work. It dates back to the 1850's, so we came up with a plan to allow for individual dining rooms and a pub area that include TV's, darts and occasional music - the perfect combination of our two dreams. Jim collects Griffins so the name came easy. Griffins are a mythological character with the body of a lion, and the head and wings of an eagle. The Griffin is very popular for it has numerous virtues and apparently no vices. They display vigilance, courage and strength. They possess sharp vision and keen hearing. These instincts led them to know where buried treasures lay and to keep plunderers at bay. |

Welcome to Griffin Tavern!!Griffin Tavern is a casual, family dining restaurant with three dining rooms and wonderful outdoor seating. Chef Todd Eisenhauer and his staff offer you home-style cooking, including fish n chips, Griffin Wings, hamburgers, seafood and steaks, as well as affordable appetizers, salads, entrees and nightly specials, and of course a children's menu. We have a full bar with eight beers on tap (Guinness, Boddingtons, Newcastle, Brooklyn Brown Ale, Harp, Stella, Amstel Lite, Woodpecker Cider, and Star Hill Pale Ale), two TV's and a big screen to catch all of the sporting events or news you'd like. We also carry a variety of affordable wines. In addition to our downstairs dining rooms we also have rooms upstairs that are perfect for private dining, small functions, business meetings, etc. Come in and take a look! We are located at 659 Zachary Taylor Highway (522) in the wonderful village of Flint Hill, VA; just minutes from Skyline Drive and the Shenandoah Valley. We are also convenient to several Rappahannock County wineries. Our beautiful, Victorian style building, known to many as Chapalapa or the Bradford house, was first a home in the late 1850's. It has been added onto many times, but we hope this renovation, by the owners Jim and Debbie Donehey, will be its last! ****NOTICE**** Griffin Tavern is an internet friendly restaurant and pub. Bring your laptops and surf the web while having a pint or a meal. You can even sit out on the deck or porch!
